General Regulations

The Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (VATA) offers a one-time $500 scholarship to a deserving student who is admitted and entering their first year of a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Education Program within Virginia. A check in the amount of $500 will be sent directly to the recipient’s student account at the college/university in which the student is enrolled. It is the expectation of the VATA that the winner of this scholarship is willing to send bio and picture to be publicized.

Criteria for selection

The VATA Scholarship Program seeks to recognize students who demonstrate superior initiative with regards to pursuing a career in the athletic training profession. In granting the scholarship, the VATA will consider the following:

1. Scholarship ability (college/university course grades, honors/awards)
2. Leadership ability (leadership positions in clubs/organizations, sports, and/or other activities)
3. Responsible citizenship (community service)
4. Dedication/Interest in the athletic training profession (coursework, internships, and/or conference attendance) 

CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for this scholarship, a candidate must:
1. Provide verification of admittance to their first year of a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training program in Virginia from the institution’s Program Director. 
2. Complete the entire application, including demographic information, the name and contact information for your endorsing faculty member, name and address of the institution, and athletic training program director. 
3. Provide evidence of scholarship ability, leadership ability, responsible citizenship, and dedication/interest in the athletic training profession.
4. Submit an official OR unofficial college/university transcript of all coursework completed.
5. Two letters of recommendation (one must be from your endorsing faculty member).
6. This completed application must be submitted online by the deadline.

Required attachments

  1. Official OR Unofficial Academic Transcript from the applicant's current college/university.
  2. Resume
    1. Please attach a copy of your current resume listing any athletic training-related activities, including leadership positions in clubs/organizations, sports, and/or other activities, community service, and other related endeavors outside the classroom. Include any summer employment opportunities as well.  Please list any significant honors and/or special recognitions you have received for academic and extracurricular achievements.
  3. Personal Essay
    1. Please compose and attach a personal essay of 250 – 500 words. Use this essay to help the members of the VATA Scholarship Committee learn more about you and your career interest within the athletic training profession. In this regard, you may describe an influential person in your life, your goals for the future, and what makes you want to pursue a career in athletic training. 
  4. Two letters of recommendation must be submitted from the following:
    1. The endorsing faculty member
    2. One other college/university representative at which the student currently or previously attended.
